Biography of Carol Channing

Carol Channing is one of the best actress, singer, dancer and comedienne. Known for starring in Broadway. She was born on 31 January 1921 and died on January 15, 2019 in the age of 97.

She began as a Broadway musical actress, starring in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes in 1949 and Hello, Dolly! in 1964, winning theTony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for the latter. She revived both roles several times throughout her career, most recently playing Dolly in 1995. Channing was nominated for her first Tony Award in 1956 for The Vamp followed by a nomination in 1961 for Show Girl. She received her fourth Tony Award nomination for the musical Lorelei in 1974.

Channing was born in Seattle, Washington, U.S. as the only child of Adelaide (née Glaser; 1886–1984) and George Christian Channing (1888–1957). Her father, who was multiracial (African-American and Caucasian), changed his surname from Stucker to Channing before Carol’s birth. A city editor at Te Seattle Star, he took a job in San Franciso and the family moved when Channing was two years old. He became a Christian Science practitioner, editor and teacher.
