The Panthers selected former Auburn defensive end Stanley McClover in the seventh round of the 2006 draft days after Burns’ 8th birthday.

Burns said he owned his brother’s jersey, as well as that of future Hall of Famer and recently retired Panthers star, Julius Peppers. The idea of not just following in his brother’s footsteps, but also those of Peppers intrigues Burns, who told WFNZ’s Nick Wilson and Josh Parcell he will surpass Peppers’ mark of 159.5 career sacks.

The deal contains a fifth-year team option. Burns (6’5/249) turned pro after making 25 starts on the Seminoles’ defensive line, amassing 39.5 career TFLs with 24 sacks and seven forced fumbles. He earned first-team All-ACC in 2018 and was credited with the nation’s third-most QB pressures (66) by PFF College. Burns showcased freaky athleticism in Indy with 4.53 speed and a 94th-percentile SPARQ score. Although Burns’ run defense and play strength are obvious weaknesses on tape, his vicious initial step and ability to run the arc give him a sky-high ceiling as an outside-speed rusher.
